KATHARINA & AIDAN

A few of our favourite things

Our Vienna

There are plenty of great Vienna guides out there. This is a glimpse of ours: a handful of favourites, all easy to reach from the hotel.

Good to know

I

A coffee house is a place to sit, and nobody will rush you. Nobody will come running either; just catch the waiter's eye.

II

Tip by rounding up around 10%, and say the total out loud when you pay.

III

Shops close Saturday evening and stay closed on Sunday, but museums, cafés, and restaurants stay open.

IV

For trams and metro, buy a ticket in the WienMobil app or at a machine before boarding; there's no tap-in.

V

Drink the tap water, it comes straight from the Alps.

Eat & drink

Öfferl

Map ↗

Our favourite bakery and coffee, a few minutes from the hotel.

Café Prückel

Map ↗

Kathi's favourite Viennese café. Best cakes, and great Eiernockerl at lunch. Cash only.

Figlmüller

Map ↗

The classic schnitzel. Expect a queue; Lugeck around the corner is just as good.

Brasserie Palmenhaus

Map ↗

The best terrace in the city, in a palm house by the Burggarten. Drinks, food, people-watching.

Loos American Bar

Map ↗

Tiny bar with the original 1908 interiors by Adolf Loos. Go for a nightcap.

Kleines Café

Map ↗

Very small and very Viennese. Coffee or a glass of wine on a quiet square.

See & do

Volksgarten

Map ↗

Our favourite park, home to the rose garden and to our Thursday Stelldichein.

MAK, Museum of Applied Arts

Map ↗

Kathi's favourite museum, for applied arts and design. Two minutes from the hotel.

Tram 1 & 2, around the Ring

Hop on tram 1 or 2 and loop the Ringstraße past the opera, the Hofburg, and the Rathaus.

Donaukanal

Map ↗

Walk or run along the canal; in summer the banks turn into one long open-air bar.

Cobenzl & the vineyards

Map ↗

Up in the vineyards above the city. Great views, easy hikes, and where Saturday takes us.

What to order

Schnittlauchbrot & Eier im Glas

Kathi's favourite breakfast: bread with butter and chives, and two soft-boiled eggs in a glass.

Marillenknödel

Apricot dumplings. Vienna's sweet dishes aren't just desserts.

Eiskaffee

Black coffee with vanilla ice cream and whipped cream. Jetlag's best excuse.
